Ice Queen
This shoot was one that I’ve been dreaming up since October 2010. Unfortunately I didn’t have the resources until recently to pull it off (studio lights and a makeup artist), but my dreams came true today with this “Ice Queen” theme. The look for this shoot was partially inspired by the White Queen from the film “Narnia”. I wanted to make the model look like she was half frozen, but still beautiful and fierce. Christina (Chrissy) served as the model, she’s from the Gainesville area in Florida. Also from Gainesville is the makeup artist Moira.
This shoot was done on a budget for around $20. $5 for a can of white paint, $3 for a wreath, $2 for a couple silk flowers, $5 for a small bit of rabbit fur, a few bucks for some 8 pound fishing line, and $1.50 for some glitter. All of these items were picked up at the local Hobby Lobby, which is perhaps my favorite new spot for photo shoot accessories. When I got home I ripped apart the silk flowers and placed them in the wreath, then painted it white using the whole spray paint can. I tossed some glitter on it hoping that it would stick to the white paint and dry, but it seems like 99% of it fell right off when picking up the wreath. After everything dried I hung it using the clear fishing line.
My budget does not include the makeup artists kit, which I assume was more costly than normal because of the amount of makeup required to coat everything in white. The model’s shoulders, chest, neck and face were covered. Her hair was also sprayed white using a cheap product designed for Halloween hair dying.
As for lighting, this setup used 2 studio lights (both Einstein 640). The first light was placed just behind her on a short backlight stand. It was about 3 feet off the ground facing a seamless paper backdrop. The second light was just outside of the camera frame on the left. This light was a gridded beauty dish with a diffuser. The grid made the light more directional, while the diffuser helped smooth out some of the harsher shadows.
